The Friday Girls

Well, another "longish' story here! When I closed Stamptacular in 2004 my life changed. No more pouring over catalogs, preparing classes, doing one last demo card, hurrying out the door and just hitting the brakes at 10:00am. Usually. Changes are good, but that change was really quiet. The one thing that has been constant for the past 4 years is that Emily and I do Fridays. What a blessing. We draw, stamp, cut, color, shop, did I say shop? Okay, we always eat. Sometimes (almost every week) we argue over the state of the world. Fridays_first_emily_chirps_4

When I set up The Artistic Avenues Emily helped me, she watches my dogs when we leave, she and I are friends on Fridays....So this week we found our 'niche'. We are now the Friday Girls and from now on we are going to journal  and make art on Fridays.

This is Emilys. It  says we are trying to think of something "profound". We started this because we wanted to practice the lettering, then couldn't think of anything to say!

Here is mine... The Good Girls who sometimes  well.... Call me on Fridays!

Fridays_first_marys_good_girls_2 We used Golden Paints, dry brushed and squished (very painterly), we collaged pieces of paper and text. Then we tried to think of something to say and fit it all in somewhere!

I am addicted! This is one half page in my journal. Keeping the Friday Girls Happy. Must leave now and go buy some pens!

classes

When I look at my blog I realized I am only writing about once a month. So I decided to do this little show and let you see what we have been doing at The Artistic Avenues! I have been busy! These are just a few of the classes we have had since March. I forgot the Mixed Media class, so next time I will add the examples from that class. We did an accordian folded Technique Book that included the techniques on one side and the instruction on the other side! Six techniques in one day! The next Technique book is scheduled for August 12th and yes, you can take this class even if you missed the first one. Last week was our 'Christmas in July' classes. So definitely more to come!! What a nice bunch of gals we have attending the classes! Everyone brings either ideas or food to share!

Inchies

Just wanted to show what I finally did with my "inchies". They are such pretty little works of art, they should be displayed! I decorated a cigar box lid and inside the lid with layers. Img_2426_outside_of_the_box_4 This is the first time I've used the 100% option.

Pretty big, but at least you can see the various themes and colors!

This next one is the inside cover of the lid. I use the box to display some unmounted stamps.

Photoshop Class Monday

Collage_digital_couple_waiting_copy These are two digital art pieces that I did right before the class. It was then that I started getting good! I had spent days preparing, like we all do, when we have a class. Yet I didn't allow myself to create. Funny how much you forget when you don't use what you learn!  Talking it Collage_baby_4x6_copyuseand doing are so different.  In days gone by I had a darkroom and I would go in and come out 5 hours later. Photoshop is much the same way. You can lose yourself in the art!  The green leave is one that we did in class. We used layers for the brushes. Then we experimented with text. Each one presented a feature using a tool.

Leaves_of_gree_copy_use_smaller

Took the time to play with blending modes, adjustments and filters. Going to get ready for class number two. Not sure what to call it, but it definitely takes more than one class to cover just the basics!

Today is a Mixed Mixed Media class... Have to add some pictures to that if I get to create!! Take the time!

Getting Ready!

Img_2370_wall_stamps_3The Artistic Avenues has been busy getting ready to open! Las Vegas  is losing the only fully-stocked stamp store that we have here. Linda is retiring! So after having had a store myself and closed it I am re-opening a small area for supplies that we can't buy at the larger stores. Like ink, reinkers and new 'stuff' because I can't resist!! I guess it never ends! The picture to the right shows a wall of stamps from lots of companies, magImg_2377_golden_areaazines and books are on that same wall. We do have new clear stamps but they are not in these pictures. Have lots of Paper Artsy unmounted and Magenta self-cling stamps too! The picture on the left shows a rack of paper, golden products, charms, CDs sets and more.

Ink and stencils (you can't see them very well) are featured in the picture to the left and below. There are glass slides, glue and cleaners too. This photo to the Img_5419_em_garage_aa_2right shows EmilyImg_2373_okay_ink_2 helping me set up. Let me say I couldn't have done it without her!

We have been having classes here too. And what a good time. If you would like to know more just take a look at the newsletter on the website. http://www.theartisticavenues.com/newsletter.htm   Maybe we will see you soon in Henderson!

A Year Later!

This is a year later! Can't believe that it was a year ago I started this blog. My first post was about going to the CHA show in Anaheim. If you aren't familar with the CHA, that is short for Craft and Hobby Association. It was a good show and as usual, very big. I went with my friend Barbara, so when I say we, we really did shop for new products and make new items offered by the vendors promoting their new products. Tag_and_card_2 This is the tag we did at a booth from Australia. They had wooden tags, boxes, albums and letters.  There were double-sided papers and flowers and ribbons too.Really liked their selection. The card was Hero Arts. We stamped with Stazon on a transparency. Then glued various patterened or text Butterfy_tim_3 papers behind the stamped image. Easy and quick.  Most of the demos had to be as there are so many people! The tag on the left is made of Chipboard and inked with the new Adrirondack Pigment inks. We just did direct to paper/chipboard, and with the lighter color and stamped the flower stamp over. Then we inked the butterfly, stamped the pattern on and embellished swirls and dots with the new white pen. Love the inks........As an aImg_5353mickey_reflectdded bonus Barb and I got to spent Tuesday night at Disneyland. It was only 3 1/2 hours, and it was so much fun as I hadn't been there for years!

No Mixed Media here!

Pop_up_one_copy_2

No Mixed Media here! Been making pop-up cards for a nursing home. Have done 52 altogether so far. Took 50 cards Christmas of 2006  and that was barely enough. Pop_up_two_second There are two homes  on the highway. Think about how many we really could do!!Started doing some extras with the Cuttlebug heart background. I am really hooked on making simple cards with it. No "direct to paper", no gesso, no shading, and of all things ribbons, stickers and glitter??

Pop_up_covers_6

These are the covers for the pop-up cards. Two of the cards  are made withCuttlebug_pink stickers as the focal point. The gold card features the "Happy birthday background and I used my dusty laminator for the "package" that actually slides open with the eyelet. This one has a transparency on the package, but stamp the message on the front  and swing open for a suprise picture Cuttlebug_red_use_2underneath.

  Cuttlebug_pink_two_2

Cuttle_bug_bluesThis is my favorite! Yes, I got to use the gesso and tags and distress inks! The background is the bubbles on foil with the alcohol inks, yes then I ran through the cuttlebug. The other feathures the script background.Ok one more thing! The stamps are from Cats Life Press.  Have fun if you have one of these!!

A Day in Las Vegas

A Day in Las Vegas!

So Christmas is over, but the holiday spirit remains at leImg_2312feet_two_pair_copyrlip_2asImg_2307stript in our decorations, food, and family. We Went to the Las Vegas Strip on Thursday. Notice how busy the streets are! Just wait til December 31st for really busy!

Went to the Bellagio and saw their decorations. They are changed with each season and are always special!Img_2279balls_2Img_2276bellagio_tree_2

Aren't the Christmas balls stunning! Seeing them close up is the best! Tree and the stagtalittes are lovely with the reflected lights of the windowed ceilings.

Below the tree are beautiful flowers. Last year it was a moat of cranberries. On the right side of the Img_2272deeraisle are reindeers made of thousands of pecans! Just a couple more holiday greens and red to look at in 2007!

Tagged!

I've Been Tagged by kristy

Here are the rules

1.Link to your tagger and post these rules....

2. Share 7 facts about yourself: some random, some weird

3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post and list their names (linking to them)

4. Let them know they've been tagged by leaving a comment at their blogs!

This is hard enough, but I've timed out twice and had to rethink this each time!

1. Love Photography..Had a darkroom once, got chased by a Bison once, and I chased a skunk (head hanging out of a moving car) once. What was I thinking??

2. More photo 'stuff'..Had a friend that bought a hearce. I collected wedding dresses from Goodwill. That idea didn't pan out, so my daughter modeled the dresses on the beach! Lots of whistles that day!

3. Can play any Church Hymn on the piano and nothing else. It is a Gift

4. Can't sing anything either.

5. Get up at 3:30am. Play on floor with dog by 4:00am.

6. Love Cappuccino in  round bowls.

7. Cookies, cookies, sugar cookies, buttery cookies. Take them anytime, breakfast, lunch dinner! Going now to finish the Almond Crescents.

Sparkling New!

This is a real post quick just to let you see one of the fun things we've been doing! When we started this project I wasn't particularly excited, but I have to say the excitement comes as you add the sparkle and see every one turn out different!!  Even with one kit of the Polished Pigments/Primary Elements the possibilities are endless.   Next week I get to start the Christmas cookies and candy... Stay tuned!                                     Img_4878ornament_best_6

Altered Photos

Everytime I look at my posts I am suprised that another month has passed. I need one of those icons that say "blogging without obligation". Hope no one minds that I seem to post at three to four week intervals. What is that saying Life comes at you fast! This week we are making stockings for soldiers. But I did have some time to play. I love going Lime_journal_page_4 through past issues of magazines and finally getting a chance to try new techniques... This time I chose Randi Feuerhelm-Watts book Wide Open. The book is formatted in 4x6 cards with journaling, life and art prompts on every card. Yes, we need this book! Lime_journal_wide_open My Journal page on the left is one of the excersises in altering a photo. We mixed part bleach, part water, (less bleach than water) in a spray container. Then one shallow container of the same mixture and one container of water for rinse in another. The faces show because we used a mask. I just held the square Lime_journal_doug on the face Lime_journal_card_2 as I sprayed, then use tongs to hold the mask as I dipped it in the bleach tray and finally the rinse.  Mask ....

The card on the left was a picture of a card. It would be fun to stamp on except I am in a hurry so here is another digital idea. Used a photo and photoshop and the 'altered card for the background!Lime_journal_us_open How fun is this!!

The last picture I did was an experiment to see if I could get more blue.. Seems most of the pictures retain the red, and blue washes away. All of the pictures were regular emulsion based prints. The ones that were printed on my inkjet printer turned out aqua. Or I used too much bleach! I can see more experimenting in the future!

Seasons of Rust

Fall isn't really the season of rust, but since this is October and most everything is orange or copper, this really could be a gImg_0216_copy2a_sideood time for all kinds of rustBox_rusty_stuff_img_0066_copya ! From that box of  rusty screws, bolts and  wires that was free for the taking and I didn't take... Can you believe that... to the backyard rusty Img_0830_copy8a rods and  odd  shaped parts. Pretty cool. The 'gray' rust is from the streets of England. The
wavy rust is Img_0209_copy4aactual Bath_rust_aaBath_rusty_water_3rust from   Roman  baths in Bath  England.  And so one must have a picture of the rusty water!

What can one do with all this rust?

Wow! How about background textures? How about mix them up in Photoshop and make several textures from two or more together! Okay you could try something funky like this!

Rust_with_no_curvesgirlsaaaa Feel free to use these as you like. To the left is the album with more pictures that you can copy and use! Have fun!!

Weekend Garage Sale

Had a great week and weekend shopping with friends. Saturday we went to an awesome garage sale. It was a feast for any of us who love the vintage, old, worn, antique or grungy! There were beautiful Magazine_picture_for_web1_2ribbons, and cut lace. I did get a few pieces of them. The magazines and paper always win me over. Days gone by, nostalgia, whatever it is I love it! The McCall's magazine is dated 1902. The Paris London/America is the spring edition for 1912.  Magazine_picture_insideThe inside graphics are just as good as you can see. There are coats for $19.90 and dresses for $2.90. Very cool. Did I mention that the ribbon was lovely....

Below are just a few more of my buys, check out the old post cards. The small food publications, jello, kellogs, and more are just perfect as inserts in our books or in a special pocket! We really did have a good time.

Paris Mosiac

Started out having some fun in photoshop! Worked with some 'actions' and got stuck and, as you can guess it was five hours later and very simple to do!

In the meantime I made a sheet of mosiacs from Paris. Contactsheet001use_this_copy_5Maybe more like a contact sheet, but I did take some time to get them in a particular order! The second two pictures are of Graffitti as we entered the city and taken from the train. The window and street views were from the hotel. The Arch de Triumph, the cafes, the people, and a walk on the Champs-Elysees are the next. Add in the beautifully decorated storefronts, and another walk to the Eiffel Tower. Take a trip on the River Siene and enjoy a whole other perspective. The last pictures are of the Louve.

Mixed Media

Still working but it is early and am up early, so decided to post my mixed media album. Somehow it got deleted! We need an instruction book for blogs! Sure someone, somewhere must be working on one as we speak! Mm_orig_mirror_acontrast_web_2  I See the fairy could use alittle more work. Sometimes I think a  piece is done, then days later I go back and add to it! Maybe some words, text or just a frame.....

Thoughts on stamping....

This has been an enlightening week for me. A few of you know that I used to have a stamp store in Las Vegas, and one before that in Oregon. This week I got to work for Linda at Las Vegas Art Stamps and it has been deja vue. The questions are the same as 10 years ago, the excitement is still there and especially the camaradrie with the people. Linda is closing her store in March and that leaves this area without that specialty. Online businesses are wonderful  http://www.theartisticavenues.com/ they can not offer that touchy feely as you thumb through a new book, pick up a uninked rubber stamp or most importantly get to see that demo at the store and learn a new technique. Embossed_gold_foil_bird Gold_embossed_ornaments

Img_1997_purple_bird_2 How long has it been since we got our stencils out of a box? And yes, these are 'cards' . Haven't done that in long while. The bird stencil took alittle longer. Note: none required a lightbox. The bird was stenciled with a pallate of shiva oilsticks, then embossed with the transparent stencil paste and lastly glitter while still wet. The center gold ornaments were done with Gold embossing paste, and the flower stencil on the right was also done with the gold embossing paste with gold leaf on top! One more FYI: be sure to wash your stencils immediately. Now go have some fun! Make a card for a friend!

Its in the details!

Going to try to do a moving image of these cool little 'details' like photo show or bubble share. For now I will share some of them with you.In_details_man_pen_nibs The image of the man with the 'pen nib' is in one of my Vintage mesh books. The little tin and nib were antiqued with Modern options rust and patina.In_details_burned_transparencyThis image on the right is a transparency that has burned edges.In_details_string_art The ladys face is decorated subtly by an artful covering of threads and beads. Thank Sue for this one, it is so pretty! Another thanks to Corrine Stubbson for the lovely paper beads on her blog. Because of her I added a couple selections of the fabric beads that I use on the Handmade journals.  The beads were made from dyed muslin strips. They are embellished with Img_1980bead_orangeglitter, beads, fiber, embossing Img_1974bead_tapestrpowder and charms. Oh, I nearly forgot, we stamped a script on the ends of the fabric before we rolled them up on straws!

Hand Made Books & Journals

This has been a week of working on my hand made books... Just love doing the Vintage Copper Mesh  Books originally taugThree_pages_from_red_2ht by Nina Bagley. The cover features a photo image Img_1659_red_cover_2encased in mica. The images on the far left represent three pages with unique little envelopes, tags or enclosures! The next three pages show different types of mesh and sizes of the pockets! Img_1672_mesh_1_2Img_1675_unique

You can easily add your photos and family treasures! Think old medImg_1674_uniq_m_2als, coins, timepieces, lace, buttons, keys, dried flowers, needles, thread. Each of us has a story to tell!

Belguims Best

Img_1318_copy_horse_in_street_copy Yesterday I made a new album titled Beautiful Brugge. Today I found more pictures including pictures of the delicious chocolate and pastry shops! I will add these to the album soon, but for now you can enjoy at your leisure.Img_1329_fat_chocolates Img_1336_copy_chocolate_window_copy Img_1392_chocolate_store_inside_cop Img_1389_omas_tarts_copy Ummmm... are you hungry yet? I have to say the store windows whether it is food or art are fabulous and definitely Img_1402_chocolate_better_chocolate enticing! One more picture in this series is from Dumons  Chocolate store. It is featured in the Rick Steves CD on Brugge. It was alittle hard to find as there are several "market" squares in Brugge. And Dumon was tucked away  Img_1498_dumon_rick_steves_copyat the end of the street. Their chocolates are made fresh! One more item of intrest the Markets remind me of a town square. Each market seems to feature its own activity. There was a band here  and people were just sitting and relaxing on benches. One market featured kids rides and of course more shopping!  Img_1366_market_copy_2

My Travel Journal

Img_1598_copy_journal_edge Img_1595_copyjournal_first Img_1592journal_cover Another week has nearly flown by! I have been working on my journal. Remember, my journal may be slightly on the scrapbook side, but I want to be able to see and feel what this trip was all about. It is hard to gather your many friends around your laptop and show your pictures. So I defied the statistics and actually printed the pictures. Both journals, yes, there are two, are canvas with acrylic painted on both the inside and outside covers. The pages are watercolor paper. Eventually I Img_1599journal_louvewill embellish the outside covers. And there are memories yet to record on the pages. The book is 9 x 9 large enough to hold some pictures, or draw, but really hard to carry while traveling! I wrote on scrap paper and once with black ink on a dark green placemat! Can't glue that in the book as you can't hardly see it.

Ornamentals and Architecture

Arched_doorway_2

  1. What an exciting two weeks! Another time and certainly another place in history. We visited three countries and had a great time experiencing different foods, art, and architecture. What pictures could I share with you? I would have a hard time deciding. Started with the lovely arched doorways and ornamental architecture. Angel_ornament_2Add in structural elements from the streets and pathways..Holes_and_rust_2_2 Wouldn' t

The arched door at the top is the back of Westminister abbey and the door below is Bath_076_doorHoles_and_rust_3from the Angel_blue_londonBath Abbey. The ornamental angels are from Westminister Abbey. From London to France to Belgium by plane, train, bus and tubes we were busy and sometimes

New Life for Spring

New life for Springtime.. Easter is a time that signifies new spirt and life. A Christening is a dedication or commitment. So with a feeling of nostalgia, I wanted to share my grandmothers Img_0666_flower_garder_keepweb"flower garden" quilt and my father and his brothers chrChristeng_dress_on_black_bg_webistening dresses. There are three brothers and four dresses so I never knew which one belonged to my dad. Maybe someday I will find that "one" photo! Christening_blowing_wind_warm_2I wish I had taken better care of the quilt. We actually used it, and I made some Christmas angels from part of it for each of the kids. Another note.... I have a lot of beautiful quilts and have no idea if my Mother or either of the Grandmothers made them. So ask lots of questions while you can! Love the detail on the   dresses. The lace on the collar and the trim match. The pleats are hand sewn. There are Img_0686bodice_lace_no_collarImg_0691_copyskirt_pleats_lacetwo more dresses that have tatting and embroidery. I will add them to a folder soon. You could use them in digital art or or make some brushes from parts of them! It might be a couple weeks before I can finish the folder so maybe you can check back then. For now have a Happy Easter holiday!

Digital from the Air

Digital_moms_sewing_woman_aaa_copy_1 Been a busy week here, and March has arrived! The good news is the weather is finally going to get warmer! I have been determined to do a digital collage. The background of the 'church steeple print' features one of the prints from the "From the Air" collection of pictures literally taken from Church_steeple_and_plane_7_copy3cb_noise_2the air somewhere over Colorado. When I got through playing with the white balance on the camera and curves in photoshop, who knows for sure! The white stream on the upper left of the collage is the Colorado river! You could use these images for that spacecraft landing or anything that your imagination can visualize. Check the folder in the left column and have fun! For the collage on the right I used Moms sewing kit that I scanned and copied for the background. Feel   free to scan these and use them in your collage or art projects! Collage_moms_baking_lesson_1 Sometimes it is hard to find the images needed for that sewing project!Collage_moms_baking_lesson_copy_2

Visual journal postcards!

We are sitting here at Las Vegas Art Stamps visiting with Linda and teacher Juliana Coles. Juliana taught classes this weeked at Lindas store and we had a blast! As usual I got sidetracked  while writing in my blog and it is already Friday. Juliana has gone home and we are left with her visions. We also have the new book by Suzanne Simanaitis "Kaleidoscope". Another fabulous creation. In that book is a fun art project..Visual_cover building a postcard to yourself written by Juliana. We followed the instructions as told. These are truly tiny works of art! Tiny one inch squares, painted, stenciled, inked, stamped, or collaged. You will love making or receiving one of these! These are the ones that I did for my swap.In return I received 100 pieces of art from some fabulous artists! Some of our groups are

One_hundred_squares_second_forty_copy_1One_hundred_squares_20_only sponsoring swaps featuring these little works of art in selected themes. The most popular is different colors!One_hundred_squares_for_swap_only_forty_2 Had this great idea for making a book and displaying the little squares between transparancies  so you could see both front and back, revealing the artist name for each little piece of art! Haven't figured out how to keep the squares from sliding, so as soon as I do my book I will put it on the site. Try collaging and painting a strip, cut it in squares and embellish. It is addicting!

Shopping for Frames

Emily and I went shopping yesterday, as we do every Friday that includes coffee, bagels and stimulating arguments. Someday I will tell  you about that, but not just now. Yes, Emily is a real person and this week we shopped for picture frames. Wanted to enhance my mixed media art. I thought it would look nicer 'top' mounted and framed. Well, Emily pulled this nice 'leafy' textured mat in a green hue and the image took on a new look! Collage_in_frame_copy We found the vintage frame, and that convinced me. Emily is a framer after all, so how lucky can you get for expert advice! This is one of images in the Mixed Media album. It does look completed now.Dog_eclectic_omnib We ended the day at Las Vegas Art Stamps. Angela from Eclectic Omnibus was demoing her collage stamps. What fun! Came home and stamped with a couple of Angelas stamps. How long has it been since we used our stipple brushes!
